Easy Peasy Pizza Dough

I had never made pizza dough from scratch before last night.  But I should have – it was so easy.  And It ended up being great.  (Pizza is scary for me and I actually ate a whole slice – YUM.)  I think I’m going to try baking the dough just plain, like flatbread.  I usually buy flatbread at Trader Joe’s, but I think this would be a good alternative.

Easy Peasy Pizza Dough (or Flatbread!)

Ingredients

  • 3 cups + 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 packet of yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (I just got my faucet to run hot and used that)
  • 1 tablespoon honey (or a vegan sweetener)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • garlic and chili powder (or others)

Directions

  1. Mix the water and yeast together.  Then add the honey, oil, and spices.  Add in about 2.5 cups of flour and mix.  Then add in another 1/2 cup of flour.  If the dough is still too sticky, add more flour.

  3. Let the dough sit for 10-15 minutes.  It should almost double in size.

  5. Flatten the dough out on an oiled baking sheet.  Top with your favorites and bake at 425F for about 15 minutes.

The toppings I used were spaghetti sauce, chicken (on Bobby’s part), shredded cheddar, and 1 Laughing Cow (just cut in bits and spread throughout).  I was very pleased with the result.  Have you ever made your own pizza dough from scratch?

  1. I have made it from scratch but haven’t done so for many years…but now both of my daughters do :^). I used to make it with half whole wheat and half white flour. It is really fresh tasting and hard not to keep eating piece after piece. Yours looked perfect!

  2. Haha, this brings up memories. I did try to make dough once when I was about 12 years old, and I couldn’t stretch out the dough thin enough. Therefore, after the pizza looked done and we cut it into slices, the inside of the thick crust was still raw! It tasted good though, kind of like stuffed crust pizza!

    Here’s a tasty challenge for ya: I love calzone, so ask yourself “what happens if I fill half the spread out dough with toppings, then fold the dough over and crimp the edges, poke airholes and bake?????”

  4. I did not know it was that easy! Pizza is a little scary for me too, and I always just use tortillas or Flat-Outs as crust (plus, I’m kind of lazy :)). Thanks for this recipe. I should give it a try. I bet it was good with Laughing Cow as I’m a bit obsessed with that stuff.

    OK, so I was doing so well with my breakfast variety…until I made your Dad’s stove-top oats. I’ve had it for the last 3 days in a row. So filling and good. Who knew?

  7. You totally make pizza dough making look easier than it probably is!! I’m still scared of screwing up my own…but your post has definitely piqued my interest in a DIY dough….HMMM maybe this weekend….the yeast still freaks me out though. Thank you for sharing!

  8. Your pizza looks good! I love making dough from scratch and it’s one of my favorite meals to cook because I can make part with meat toppings like my husband likes, and part with veggie toppings like I like. I actually hate most kinds of cheese so I make mine like flatbread topped with sauce and veggies – no cheese. I know, I’m weird. I have had pizza with ricotta cheese on it before, and I thought that was delicious – maybe you should try that sometime.
