Since everyone is so curious about my “chewy pitas” from yesterday, I figured I would do a product review/introduction. I accidentally bought these pitas at my local market the other day – the packaging is very similar to the normal pitas, so I just grabbed it and realized my mistake when I got home.

I was pleasantly surprised. These are made by a company called “Middle East Baking Co.”, and I think it’s a local company based out of Burlingame, CA. I can’t find much info about them online.
Product: Carb Watch Whole Wheat Pita (pack of 5, $2.89)
Ingredients: Water, whole wheat flour, wheat gluten, soy flour, oat fiber, pea fiber, guar gum, fresh yeast, salt, fumaric acid and mono-diglycerides.
Nutritionals (per 1/2 pita): 35 calories, 1 gram fat, 6 grams carbohydrates, 3 grams fiber, 2 grams protein.

These pitas are really delicious. They have a wonderful chew that I have never experienced before. They’re a little bit stretchy when you pull them apart. My favorite way to eat them is with peanut butter (actually this is the only way I’ve eaten them…). I do not eat the serving size – I eat at least 1 of these at a time, and usually 2. I bought a bunch more bags of them today because I like them a lot.
If you can find these, definitely try them out. The only place that I’ve seen them is at Milk Pail in Mountain View, CA. Let me know if you find them elsewhere.
What’s your favorite way to eat a pita?

There’s so many ways to use pita. Besides as sandwiches, my favorite is to toast in the oven a few minutes and crumble them into fake “croutons”. I add them to a salad of garbanzo beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, and feta cheese.

The chewy stretch is a creature of the low carb, yes?
Favorite way to enjoy a pita is dunked in hummus!

Thanks for featuring the pitas that you serendipitously discovered and now enjoy!

I’d love to try the chewy pita bread. Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be able to find these!
I’ll need to send an email to them to ask them to sell in the east cost too!

I’ve found the Middle East Baking Co. pita bread at Safeway markets here in Berkeley!
After having tried some other brands (Thomas, Sahara), I like Middle East’s the best, I think. I agree that they’re chewy and super tasty. I’ve never seen the Carb Watch kind though! I’ll have to keep an eye out for those. I like to buy their whole wheat miniature pitas; they’re just the right size for lunch.

Ooo those sound yummy! I think peanut butter and jelly is great on pitas, and then there’s always the hummus and veggies route!

I LOVE pita bread! I really like to use it as a pizza crust, but I also use them for makeshift fajitas every now and then.

I haven’t had pittas in a while, my grocery store has run out. I love making pitta pizzas.

These looks like a great product. I wonder if they sell them in the Sac area. I really like the ingredients list, and I love that chewy texture you decribed!

Maggie,
I want those pitas! Amazing stats. I would definitely be slathering them in almond butter! So jealous.

Sounds interesting. 6 grams of carbs don’t sound bad at all and I prefer my pitas really chewy.
