I had food poisoning or something π So this was what helped me feel better:
That is McDonald’s ice cream (again). Cold things (to me) are soothing when I’m feeling ill, and although I don’t love the idea of putting dairy in my sensitive and upset stomach, this really did make me feel better.
I wasn’t really able to get anything done today (I was in bed most of the time) after I came home from work feeling sick around 1pm. As for exercise I did walk in the morning and got in about 4500 steps. Bobby got me an iPod last week and it has a pedometer built in. I am in love (with him and the iPod). It’s the Product (RED) version because I like being charitable, and red is one of my favorite colors (the other is purple).
I listened to a good podcast on my walk to work called Dishing Up Nutrition. They were a bit too focused on animal protein (5 times a day?) but aside from that I left with some good knowledge. I may try 2 things for my IBS stomach called Bifido bacteria and L-glutamine. Apparently they are good for the intestines and healing. We shall see.
What do you scrimp on? I used to be more frugal than I am now but I’m starting to loosen up a bit. I still feel gipped when I have to go to a movie ($15) and I honestlyΒ don’t like to spend more than about $8 on a meal. New York made me increase that slightly.
I used to describe myself as cheap…but now I would say I’m just “not extravagant.” I don’t skimp on things like I used to…and I usually buy something if I want it. I’m just not a huge shopper. My husband has helped me loosen u with money. Financial insecurity is one of my biggest fears, so money has always been a touchy issue for me.
Hope you’re feeling better!!

so sorry you got sick Maggie! That so stinks!
and now I know why I’ve had a craving for a McDonald’s soft serve! oh I love those!
yes I am a cheap….you know what!
I cheap myself out of everything…until a new techhie gadge appears on the scene (say iPad) and i whip out my card faster than you can say soft serve!
I brown bag it every day, skimp on clothes, shoes and really important things like bras! haha and than agonize over the price of coconut butter ….
and me?
I am scared of EVERYTHING.
it stinks!
feel better chickie!
xoxo
Sorry you aren’t feeling well! It’s amazing how little things like ice cream can make us feel better though! π
Btw, you were missed at Wild Ginger! π
we have the same ipod!!! π i love it!
Hope you’re feeling better! It’s so funny your remedy was ice cream because I ALWAYS crave dairy when I’m sick. Sometimes I don’t blog what I eat when I’m sick because my grandma reads my blog and yells at me bc “dairy’s bad for illness.” Psssssh
Ack! Maggie I’m sorry to hear. Sounds like we had really similar days. Mine hit about 11am and I literally thought I was going to die. I’m not sure if mine was food poisoning or a bug either. I just ate for the first time so we’ll see how it goes.. ick. Oddly I’m craving CAKE. Like a big white cake cupcake w/ no frosting.
I’m ridiculously cheap, but there are a few things I won’t scrimp on. Things where quality really matters like tampons, a favorite cereal, or a good ingredient that J can eat and I know is healthy. Other than that I usually opt for something on sale, generic item, or 2nd hand. I’m not too picky, I can usually make do w/ anything as long as I’m comfortable w/ the price I paid.
bifudis (i.e. “bifido bacteria”) is acidophilus bifudus and is excellent for gut health
so sorry you have food poisoning. I swear all the protein i have been trying to choke down makes me feel like i have food poisoning but I am over trying to do that to myself.
feel better sweetie!
I am the cheapest person alive. No, really. I’m pretty sure of that. Ok, at least the cheapest person in blogworld. I cringe when I have to buy an $8 jar of almond butter, and I have zero brand loyalty with things like toothpaste, because I just buy what’s on sale π Also, I always order the cheapest wine on the menu. Classy, eh?
aww mags i hope this passes soon! glad you have some cool mickey d’s soft serve to sooth π when i was sick really bad last year after my endoscopy, my mom came over and fed me saltines and rice cakes just like when i was a kid. i loved it. well not the sick part, but you know.
im not too cheap, i really appreciate quality when it comes to a lot of things, but i love fun cheap stuff too like socks and dollar store notebooks and little baskets and candle holders. cheap sashimi is AWFUL.
and im afraid of cheap sashimi.
I sometimes feel like I must be extravagant because (I now sort of hate to say this) I don’t feel like I scrimp on things. I mean, I don’t have a crazy wardrobe or anything like that and I don’t think I’m really extravagant. I would say that I’m pretty cheap when it comes to cars (my beat-up thing is currently off the insurance) and can stay in almost any cheap hotel and not care, and I do LOVE a bargain. However, I have major brand loyalty to things like shampoo, make-up, and skin products, and I know that we spend a decent amount on fresh fruits and veggies (but not a lot going out, so it balances out in the end).
As for the subway – my husband used to live in NY and he, on different occasions, got off the subway because he was sick (I think he was hungover on most of those occasions). NOT a fun experience. Another time, he was totally doped up after major dental work and took the subway the wrong direction to the end of the line. Nice.
Hope you are feeling better soon!
Love the word faux! wish I was more french!
Good to hear about everyone’s fears (I have an odd but serious one of ants); we’re all afraid of something.
Thanks for the post
Katherine
I have issues…we all know that…but I scrimp on food haha I’d rather have my money for traveling, clothes, and books than for food. I can feed myself on cheap stuff like tuna, lettuce, and carrots while still looking and feeling “good” about myself π
I’m REALLY afraid of bees. Have always been and probably always will be π
To the other questions.. well, I tend to overspend than to scrimp, sadly. That’s way I’m in trouble some months but usually it has been so worth it π
hahaha Hello my long lost twin!!!
1.) I always eat ice-cream or cold things when I am sick. It not only makes me feel better, but I remember in ALL the manga /cartoons I’ve watched growing up in Asia…the sick kids have always gotten better by eating ice-cream. π
2.) I have the same Red iPod nano and I love love love it too!!!! Not only is it the best looking color, but it supports a great cause!!
Last but not least, I ALSO feel jipped when i have to watch a movie more than $8. I HATE paying state taxes on anything. I almost bought the google phone but after i put it in my cart and tax was calcualted to be $50, I promptly decided not to buy it. After 3 months of research. hahahah Did this too with a coach bag and actually got a brand new, real bag on ebay!! π
Being sick to your stomach is the worst! I hope you feel better soon. I like cold things when I’m sick too; if you have a stomach virus/food poisoning, you should stick to easily digestible carbs for a day or two (plain toast or bagels, bananas, white rice, tea, applesauce). Sounds boring, but it “clears everything out”. I bet popsicles would make you feel better too!
I am totally cheap except when it comes to groceries/food — I never buy lower quality produce or junkier food because it’s cheaper. Other than that, I’m game for a deal. Although I don’t usually buy too-cheap clothes/shoes because they seem to fall apart so quickly.
Happy Wednesday π
I’m cheap about a lot of things, but I’ll pay good money in other situations (for example, I will TOTALLY pay a few extra $$ to get brown rice in my sushi instead of white rice. But pay a couple $$ for bus fare? No thanks, I’ll walk ;)).
That’s funny about the ice cream; when I was a kid and got sick, I would CRAVE slurpees! Nowadays, I like eating really cold grapes when I’m sick. Weird.
Feel better, my dear.
So sorry you were sick Maggie, but I loved your Mickey D’s cure. They have great soft serve, and it’s CHEAP. I’m a shopper, but CD is not, and so I’ve learn to curb my spending habits a bit. π
Haha, I was just saying to my husband how one of my biggest fears is awkward social situations. Most times I’m very outgoing and friendly (at work, at the grocery store with strangers, etc) but various situations freak me out and make me clam up. Yikes I feel awkward just thinking about it! π
Hope you feel better!
