HEAB: Love, Marriage, and Hamburgers

Today we left for Maui at the crack of dawn. We’re on the plane right now. Thanks so much to Heather, an amazing blogger friend, for kicking off the guest posts while I’m gone!

Heather here from Heather Eats Almond Butter (HEAB for short). Many thanks to Maggie, one of my favorite bloggers, for inviting me to guest post while she is away on her honeymoon. Maggie, many congrats on your marriage, and I hope you and Bobby are having a wonderful time!

My husband Chris and I and will have been married for three years come September, and although marriage comes with many challenges, these past several years have been the best of my life!

One challenge of our marriage has been my bizarre eating habits and rules. Although CD (my nickname for Chris) and I both enjoy healthy foods, rarely am I comfortable with just going with the flow and enjoying the exact same dinner as my husband. Like I’ve said before, CD is more of a veggie/meat guy, and I’m more of an veggie/oat girl. I eat and enjoy meat, but sometimes I freak out and skip the burger at dinner and pile on more veggies instead. Honestly, it mostly boils down to a calorie thing which if often silly because sometimes, I just really want the burger! However, recently, I was diagnosed with anemia, and I’m also pregnant. So, I know that getting plenty of dietary iron is essential for me right now, and I actually feel better when I eat more red meat. Since it helps keeps the dizziness and headaches at bay, I’ve been letting my husband cook for me…burgers and all! Normally, I would never let Chris fix my plate. No way, I had to be in charge, and see everything that went into my dinner. What can I say, I’m a total control freak, but I’m starting to let all of that go, and for the first time in years, I feel so free around food. Being pregnant has taught me so much, and I’m really learning that all things in moderation can work. In the past, I was always all or nothing, but now I’m enjoying food rather than living by so many rules…and it’s wonderful! icon smile HEAB: Love, Marriage, and Hamburgers

So CD, what’s for dinner?

Last night, he grilled buffalo ranch grass fed burgers, and we each made our own salads to go along with them. Usually, I would have used salsa or light vinaigrette for my dressing, but I went with CD’s favorite salad dressing as of late. I stirred together hummus, mustard, bacon fat drippings (oh yes I did), and a bit of water to thin and tossed it with tons of spinach, crumbled goat cheese, cherry tomatoes, sun dried tomatoes, crumbled bacon, celery, and pickles for the best salad I’ve had in a long time. Thanks CD for taking such good care of me. I love you!

So, let this be a lesson to you my friends. Husbands aren’t always right about everything, but sometimes we need to listen to them, especially when they only have our best interests at heart. icon smile HEAB: Love, Marriage, and Hamburgers

    Congrats Maggie!

Heather, I too am slowly learning that moderation is the way to go. Why live by so many rules and restrictions? So nice to see your husband take such good care of you — and those burgers look amazing.

My husband has definitely taught me to have fun, even when I’m not very “good” at it. I usually get so frustrated playing games or sports that I do not excel at, but he makes me laugh and just enjoy myself, even if I am failing miserably!

Love HEAB! She always has great things to say about food and life in general.. and lately, even more inspiring food posts, like um, yes, bacon fat and bison. As a culinary student, I’m all for the bacon.

Hope you and Bobby are having an amazing honeymoon!

This was such a fantastic subject to touch upon. A lot of people have problems with letting ‘bad’ foods (i.e. bacon fat, which happens to be delicious) into their lives even with the idea of portion control. Even though everyone’s body is different, each individual processes food/calories/nutrients differently. It is always scary to let a ‘bad’ food into your life again, but when used in moderation-even if that sounds scary- it is a lot easier to be OK with it in the long run.

I can also attest to men being helpful in knowing what’s best. My boyfriend is a wonderful cook and knows the things that I like to eat and most importantly, is really good with helping me feel more and more at ease with eating foods that other wise scare me.

Congrats on your marriage, Maggie (and Husband)!

What a nice post. My husband has taught me that God’s grace is totally unlimited. It is the only possible explanation for why I am still married. No other way he could put up with me. ;) I’m kindof joking but kindof not too.

Great guest post :) I also have quite different eating habits than my boyfriend (although now he’s changing his ways a bit to the healthier way!) but I’ve learned that sometimes it’s just easier to compromise a bit and eat his way ;)

    Happy honeymoon, Maggie!

Great post! And, yes, hamburgers are great :) Personally I enjoy them with ketchup, mustard and relish…and a few pickles. Love the pictures as well.
